Detoxifying Cleanses 101

It is not uncommon for people to overindulge in foods that strain the liver. As the liver is the body’s natural detoxifier, when it is overburdened, the body holds on to toxins and all sorts of symptoms can arise such as a sluggish metabolism, sugar cravings, fatigue, a lack of focus and irritability. Sometimes, overindulgence results in unwanted weight gain or new aches and pains.

The desire to detoxify our bodies and eliminate toxins is not a new one. An ancient belief called the theory of autointoxication led many to practice cleansing. Autointoxication means that undigested meat and other foods build-up in the colon. The build-up produces toxins, which then poison our bodies.

There are many products and diets on the market that claim they will help with weight loss, energy, mental clarity and more. One should tread lightly when contemplating a cleanse because the wrong approach can result in dehydration, fatigue, nausea and in the worse scenario, even intestinal harm.

That being said, the right cleanse can boost one’s energy and metabolism; support the body’s natural ability to remove toxins; clarify one’s thoughts; boost the healthiness of our skin; and let the body take a break from the demands of digestion. A cleanse providing nutrients from wholesome and fresh vegetables and fruit juices can go a long way. In addition to giving the liver a vacation from breaking down heavier proteins and fats, the liver, kidneys and gall bladder get a much needed filter change. After a cleanse, one is full of energy and toxin-free. One will feel re-energized and focused. Others claims that cleanses help improve sleep habits and decrease the cravings for certain foods.

Next time one is feeling a little sluggish, why not set aside some time and try and give one’s system a cleaning.

The Wilmington Yoga Center will be hosting a remote workshop beginning September 7, 2014 to teach students how to perform a 12-day liver detox, natural food cleanse. This cleanse will rejuvenate the body and help jumpstart one’s journey to health.
