This 3-day course will cover Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the impact of trauma on the brian and the body, current treatments, particularly those that emphasize the body, with an eye toward yoga as well as the subjective experience of the survivor: what does it feel like to live now, post trauma?
Our focus will be on why and how to modify yoga to make it more trauma-sensitive. David Emerson is the Director of Yoga Services at the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline Massachusetts, where yoga has been used as an adjunct treatment for PTSD for several years with a variety of groups, from survivors of chronic childhood abuse and neglect, to teenagers, to war veterans. Examples of integrating trauma-sensitive yoga into all of these communities will be given. Along with a more didactic presentation, participants will be able to practice techniques in small groups.
