The Yoga Way: Towards Psychological Health and Emotional Well-Being

Nurturing the Mind

Benefits of Holle Black’s approach:

  • This course gives a concentrated overview of the human condition from ancient yogic and modern psychological perspectives.
  • We review yogic concepts related to understanding the mind, including koshas, kleshas, samskaras, and the gunas.
  • We explore how these concepts fit together with western ideas of mind and how they may be useful in understanding and treating dysfunction.
  • Students will learn Tantra Hatha yoga therapy methods for managing or assisting in healing psychological difficulties, including depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress responses.

From the experiences of our lives, we make stories about who we are. These manifest in how we hold our body, breathe, think, feel, and move in relationship to other and the environment. These stories have energy and create energy patterns, both healthy and unhealthy. If we can recognize our stories, our patterns, our underlying energies, we can change them. When these change, our lives change. This course gives a concentrated overview of the human condition from ancient yogic and modern psychological perspectives. Holle BlackHolle Black RYT 500 began practicing yoga in 1993. After practicing many different lineages she was drawn to Pranakriya because it deeply explores yoga philosophy and emphasizes proper and safe alignment, bringing focus not just to the physical side of yoga, but to the psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a deeper yoga practice. Holle’s completed training in the Pranakriya tradition includes her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training under the directorship of Yoganand Michael Carroll, William Hufschmidt, and Marlysa Sullivan, her 500-Hour Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Certification under the directorship of Marlysa Sullivan and Yoganand Michael Carroll, and her Prenatal Teacher Training under the directorship of Jacci Reynolds. She is a co-founder and director of Centering Youth, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization with yoga programs in the Fulton County and Dekalb County Juvenile court systems, Haven ATL, and Covenant House. Holle has completed 20 hours of trauma-sensitive yoga training with David Emerson and the Trauma Center Yoga Program, and has also trained with Matthew Sanford in Adaptive Yoga emphasizing and exploring the mind-body connection, and with Mark Lilly and Street Yoga bringing yoga to at risk youth in an urban setting. In addition, Holle has completed a 5-week victim advocacy course through The Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence and Agnes Scott College. She brings all her varied trainings and unique experience to her perspective on trauma and teaching trauma-sensitive yoga.
