This 10 hr workshop will focus on Iyengar
Yoga w/emphasis on back care. It will
incorporate the needs of those with special
concerns as well as those desiring to refine
their practice. It will address how
to use yoga to increase strength and flexibility
and is appropriate for those dealing with
their own back-related issues as well as
yoga teachers and those who treat these conditions
in others.
Elise Browning Miller has an M.A. in Therapeutic
Recreation from the University of North Carolina
and is an Intermediate Senior certified Iyengar
yoga teacher. Elise is a founder and
director of the California Yoga Center in
Mountain View, California and has taught
Iyengar yoga since 1976. She also teaches
special workshops on back care and scoliosis,
leads yoga retreats internationally and sees
students privately for back problems as well
as sports injuries. Elise co-authored
Life is a Stretch: Easy Yoga, Anytime,
Anywhere with Carol Blackman and Yoga for
Scoliosis video/DVD. Elise’s
energized teaching approach encourages students
to use their inner “knowing” to
guide the healing process and encourages
individuals to go beyond their perceived
limitations

WYC Teacher Training Program
The WYC is honored to be recognized as one of the few Yoga
Alliance Teacher Training Schools in the state of NC. The
WYC Yoga Teacher Training meets and exceeds all of Yoga
Alliance’s
requirements for 200 hour certification.
Based
on Yoga Alliance standards, the goal of the WYC Teacher Training
Program is to provide the fundamental tools that potential
teachers need to offer complete, safe, and eclectic hatha
yoga classes. Students wishing to become yoga instructors
or those just desiring to deepen their understanding of yoga
will find this course diverse and comprehensive. With four
directors of diverse backgrounds, the training provides instruction
in the practice and theory of Kripalu, Ashtanga, Kundalini
and Iyengar traditions. Yogic lifestyle and ethics, anatomy
and physiology, and pranayama are covered in detail. Teaching
Methodology is covered in depth, including posture assists.
Unique experiences of chanting, drumming, and creative movement
will be covered. “Seva”, or “selfless service”
will also be a part of our program, working in conjunction
with our neighboring foods cooperative, Tidal Creek.
Curriculum
- Over 100 hours in Technique Classes in Iyengar, Ashtanga,
Power, Kripalu, Yoga w/Props, and Gentle Therapeutic Classes
- 20+ hours of instruction and practice in teaching methodologies
- 20+hours of Anatomy and Physiology
- 20+ hours of Philosophy, Ethics, Vegetarianism, and Lifestyle
- 15+hours of Practicum
Total Training: Over 200 hours
Meets & Exceeds Yoga Alliance Standards
Benefits
Upon completion all graduates may apply for National Registry
with the Yoga Alliance
- 6 months of free unlimited classes. We encourage all teachers
in training to take as many classes as possible!
- 20% discount on all specialty workshops and trainings
- 10% discount on media/books
Cost
$2300 plus books. The cost is $2500 after August 1, 2004.
Payment plans and some financial aid is available. If
you do not wish to participate in the entire program,
you are welcome to drop in on specific weekends for a
pro-rated cost. Please call our office at 910-350-0234.
All forms should be filled out completely and due no later
than September 6, 2004, along with your non-refundable
deposit of $150. Once your application and registration
is received and complete, you will receive your information
packet. Classes meet approximately one weekend per month,
for a total of 8 weekends over 6 months.

Instructors
Kristin
Cooper, RYT
Kristin Cooper, RYT, Yoga Alliance Certified,
completed her 200hr teacher training at the Kripalu
Center for yoga and health as well as power yoga
teacher training w/Beryll Bender Berch. Kristin
often serves as a program assistant for Kripalu
Center, and is a founding member and director
of the Wilmington Yoga Center. She has a deep
love for yoga and believes that all people can
practice this path! Kristin has worked w/students
with cancer and HIV, and enjoys teaching to a
variety of all ages, shapes and sizes! She has
also worked as a private instructor for Ashley
Judd, during filming of ‘Ya Ya Sisterhood’,
and the cast of Dawson’s Creek. Her personal
practice has been inspired and guided by an extraordinary
group of human beings to whom she is extremely
grateful, including: Bryan Kest, Shiva Rea, Teresa
Spanos, Beryll Berch, Loren Gulak, Kevin Simpson,
Kripalu, Gurumukh, and her loving family!
Nancy Hayes, RYT
Nancy is a certified and Yoga Alliance Registered
yoga teacher at the 500 hour level (RYT) with
over 25 years teaching experience. Since 1984,
her primary focus of study has been in the Iyengar
method. Nancy’s study of yoga is ongoing and includes
teacher training with internationally known Yoga instructors
throughout the country and includes course work at The Iyengar
Institute of San Francisco, The Omega Institute, Rhinebeck,
NY and Unity Woods Yoga, Bethesda, MD. Nancy combines a gentle
approach to Yoga with more vigorous methods of practice for
physical and mental harmony. Nancy’s classes
are tailored to meet the needs of the individual
and are suitable for men and women of all ages.
Yoganand
Yoganand, a certified professional-level Kripalu
Yoga teacher, has been teaching yoga at Kripalu
for 15 years. He currently oversees the professional-level
certification program. A former member of Kripalu’s
renunciate order, he has studied extensively
with masters in the Kripalu tradition in India
and America.
Paul Chipley, MD
Paul has been practicing medicine for 9 years. After
graduating in 1990 from the Medical University of SC,
Paul completed his residency at the Medical College of
Georgia in anesthesiology in 2994 and his fellowship
at UNC in pain management in 1995. Currently, Paul practices
at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Cape Fear Hospital
and the Center for Pain Management and is Board Certified
with the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Heather Till
Certified Yoga Therapist, began practicing
yoga in 1993. She holds a BS in Psychology, is
registered with the Yoga Alliance, and is certified
in Integrative Yoga Therapy. Heather encourages students
to move gently and slowly, developing a deeper sense
of body/mind awareness. Heather specializes in pre
and postnatal yoga, extra gentle yoga for chronic health
conditions, and one-on-one yoga therapy sessions |
