Start Where You’re At

Whether it’s your first time visiting a yoga studio or you’ve been once or twice before, it’s important to remember that yoga isn’t a competition. While the goal of enrolling in more advanced classes is certainly admirable, the purpose of beginner classes is to help you develop the foundational skills you need to move on. You’re not competing against anyone, including yourself, so don’t be afraid or embarrassed to enroll in beginner yoga classes until you feel comfortable with the basics. You can’t expect yourself to pull off every pose perfectly after the first day, or even the first month, so don’t be discouraged if you’re not progressing as fast as you would like.

Speak With Your Yoga Instructor

One of the best ways to become comfortable at your new yoga studio is to speak with your yoga instructor before your first class begins. Let them know about any prior injuries you have or any limitations that could affect your progress. Knowing about your specific circumstances will allow your yoga instructor to recommend stretches, breathing patterns, and specific exercises that will ease your first-day nerves and help you develop your skills.

Don’t Give Up

Like anything worthwhile, yoga takes practice and dedication. You’ll probably find yourself sore and tired after the first few classes, and you should always listen to your body and get plenty of rest. Yoga is a practice that unfolds and develops over a long period of time, so don’t be discouraged if you miss a session or two due to unexpected circumstances or soreness.

If you’re like most people, then you’ll probably find yourself distracted and constantly pulled away from the present moment. Breathing exercises and meditation are incredibly difficult, especially given that our society is so fast-paced and distracted. Just like the physical element of yoga, practicing regularly is the only way to improve. One of the core tenets of yoga is to accept yourself as you are and to accept the present moment exactly as it is, no matter how difficult it may seem!

We hope that this post will help you develop your yoga practice. Keep an eye on our blog page to learn more about our Wilmington yoga classes! Our Wilmington yoga classes aren’t going anywhere, so take it slow and enjoy the journey!
