Yoga FAQs

If you’re like most people who have never taken yoga classes, then you probably have several questions about what to expect during your first few sessions. In today’s post, we’ll answer a few of the most common questions our yoga instructors receive from new students.

How Long Does a Yoga Class Last?

You should expect yoga classes to last between an hour and an hour and a half. Our Wilmington yoga studio offers classes that are an hour in length, and we recommend showing up between 10 and 15 minutes early to stretch and set up. You may want to spend another 10 or 15 minutes stretching after the class ends, depending on how your body feels.

Should I Eat Before My Class?

We recommend that you abstain from eating for one or two hours before your practice, as you don’t want to feel full and sleepy during the practice.

If you feel nauseous or lightheaded when skipping a meal, then opt for a light snack over a full meal until the class is over. A piece of fruit or a handful of nuts can help sustain you until the yoga class has ended.

Will Yoga Make Me Sore?

The answer to this question largely depends on your current fitness level. If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the gym, or if you rarely stretch, then it’s likely that your muscles will be sore after the first few sessions. Your body will be moving and bending in ways it normally doesn’t, and muscle soreness is a natural consequence. While your body will eventually acclimate to the practice, daily stretching at home and getting plenty of rest can help keep you loose and alleviate your soreness.

Do I Need to Buy Yoga Clothing?

One of the most common misconceptions about yoga is that it requires special and expensive clothing. First and foremost, yoga is about developing a harmonious relationship between your body and mind. All you really need to succeed is an instructor, your body, comfortable clothing, and the intention to become a better practitioner. You certainly can purchase clothing designed specifically for yoga, but it’s by no means a necessary component of your success. That being said, you may want to invest in a high-quality yoga mat, as this is something that you can bring to the yoga studio and use at home for years to come.

We hope that this post has answered some of your questions about yoga. Keep an eye on our blog page for future posts in which we’ll continue to answer your questions about yoga.
